The craft may travel at virtually any altitude (including space vacuum), and often travel with almost no engine noise whatsoever. They may also stay aloft for nearly indefinite periods. Small nuclear reactors may power some models: others, hybrid fuel cells. Some models may use a combination of these, or other technologies entirely.
Though little known outside the personnel involved in these black projects themselves, suitably modified versions of the airships might easily take on space or undersea missions with few pressure-related problems, so long as the craft are automated or remotely-piloted, or suitable life support mechanisms are provided for any crew members onboard (these measures are typically limited to something like space or pressure suits for individual crewmembers, or one or more very small protected living space(s) onboard). Submarine excursions are actually tougher than space missions for such craft, in some ways. Submarine missions are usually best performed by the smaller models, as the inherent fragility of the design is much more evident underwater, while virtually any size ship may achieve space altitude and beyond-- though various external aids may be required to actually free such craft completely from Earth's gravity well.
